Share to Olaf from another app

Sharing to Olaf is one of the handiest features of the mobile app. When you spot a product in another app — Amazon, eBay, your web browser, a link sent on WhatsApp — you can add it to one of your lists without copy-pasting a single URL.

It only takes four steps. First, on the app where you see the product, tap your phone's Share button (the iOS or Android share icon). Then, in the list of destinations that appears, choose Olaf Wishlist. The Olaf app opens and immediately triggers the automatic extraction of the title, price and image. All that's left is to pick the destination list and confirm.

Requirement: the Olaf app must be installed on your phone to show up in the share sheet. For even more accurate extraction on a computer, the browser extension remains the most reliable method.

Scan a product in store

When you're in a shop and you spot a product you like, scan its barcode directly with the Olaf app to add it to one of your lists in just a few seconds. Handy for never forgetting a gift idea you spotted in store, or to fill out your own list while you're shopping.

From the app's home screen, tap the "+" button then "Scan a product". You have three ways to enter the code: point your camera at the barcode, import a photo of the barcode from your gallery (handy if you snapped it earlier in store), or type the number in manually (8 to 14 digits). Olaf automatically identifies the product, its image and its brand.

You can also start the scan directly from one of your lists: the “+” button at the bottom-right of a list's screen offers scanning, with that list already set as the destination and only the actions available to you. It's ideal for adding several products in a row at the same place.

If the barcode isn't recognised, you can also search for the product by name. Once the product is identified, you choose its destination among your private lists, public lists or your personal Memo lists. If the product is already in the target list, Olaf saves you the duplicate and instead offers to open the existing gift idea, for example to increase its quantity.

**Scan to reserve a gift.** If the scanned product matches an item on the wishlist of someone in one of your groups (and as long as you're not the recipient of that list), Olaf shows a "On X's list" banner with a "Reserve for X" button that takes you straight to the list, ready to finalise the reservation. The recipient is never notified — the surprise stays intact. If the gift is already partly reserved, Olaf offers to reserve the rest or to adjust your own reservation; if a group gift is under way, it points you to the list so you can join in; and if everything is already taken or the reservation is no longer possible, a clear message explains why.

**Scan to log an off-list gift for someone you know.** If you've already bought (or plan to buy) a gift that isn't on your friend's official wishlist, scan it to log it as an off-list gift on their list. Below the main button, an "Offer this as an off-list gift" call-to-action appears as soon as at least one of your friends has an active list. Pick the recipient from your groups, tweak the title / description / image if needed, then confirm: the recipient sees nothing, but the other group members are notified — again, to avoid duplicates.

Add by taking a photo in store

When barcode scanning fails — torn label, no EAN code, a foreign-language book that isn't referenced, an artisan piece spotted in a window — the mobile speed-dial on every list screen offers a third option, "Take a photo", alongside manual add and barcode scan. It's available on all three list types: private list (if you have permission to add to it), public list you own, and personal Memo list.

Two sources are offered: the camera to snap the product on the spot, or the gallery to use a photo you took earlier (handy if you shot it in store before deciding to add it). Olaf compresses the image locally before upload, which avoids multi-megabyte transfers and timeouts on slow networks.

The usual gift-idea form then opens with the photo already loaded in the preview. You manually fill in the title — the only required field — then price, priority, quantity and description if you wish. On save, the item is created and the photo is uploaded in the background through the same image pipeline used for any other entry path.

**Olaf helps you recognize the product.** As soon as you take or pick the photo, Olaf analyzes it automatically and pre-fills the title, description, price and currency for you — each suggested field is marked with a small ✨ icon. All that's left is to check and adjust before saving. On the first run, a tip from Olaf helps you frame a sharp photo with the price tag clearly visible; you can see it again anytime via the « ? » icon. These suggestions are a bonus: if Olaf finds nothing, the window simply opens with the photo and empty fields, with no error message.

Even with these suggestions, adding by photo stays a handy entry path for cases where the barcode scan can't succeed — it doesn't try to identify a specific product to match it against your loved ones' lists. It only adds the item to your list: it offers neither reserving nor declaring an off-list gift from a photo, unlike the barcode scan.

QR scanner — join a group instantly

The app includes a simple and fast QR code scanner. Point your camera at the invitation QR code displayed by another member and you join the group in a second.

For situations where scanning is not possible, manual entry of the code is always offered as an alternative. The experience remains smooth in all cases.

Direct links — instant opening in the app

Invitation links, email notifications and share links all open directly in the app on mobile. When you receive an Olaf link on your smartphone, the app opens directly on the relevant screen — group, wishlist or item — without going through the browser.

This system integration offers a smooth native experience: transitions between your messaging app and Olaf are instant. If the app is not yet installed, a browser alternative lets you continue in the browser and invites you to download the app.

An experience designed for mobile

The Olaf mobile app is designed to deliver a quality native experience. A gentle vibration confirms important actions — reservation, adding an item, joining a group — with a subtle tactile response adapted to the context. Content previews replace generic loading indicators with placeholder layouts that make waiting feel less noticeable.

Confirmation and error messages appear briefly at the top of the screen to keep you informed without interrupting your flow. These interface details, often invisible but always felt, contribute to an experience that feels fast, responsive and polished.

Available on App Store and Google Play

The Olaf Wishlist app is available for free on the App Store (iOS) and on Google Play (Android). It is compatible with recent versions of both operating systems and benefits from automatic updates that install improvements and fixes without you needing to update from the store.

All features of the web version — groups, private lists, public lists, Memos, reservations, contributions, chat — are available on mobile. The app is a faithful mirror of the web, optimised for the constraints and advantages of the smartphone.
